Dance Class Descriptions

TUNES OF FUN is a national music education program which offers playful and creative music and movement classes for children ages birth-5 years. Classes are led by dedicated professional music educators and feature the acclaimed Music Class songs and activities. Your child will be introduced to a wide variety of musical scales and rhythms, instruments and styles that help to stimulate your child’s musical growth. Each child participates at his or her own level with you or a caregiver. Siblings of different ages can enjoy class together.

JUST FOR BOYS is a fun high energy class incorporating Tap and Hip Hop. This class will help develop balance, coordination and power through strength building exercises and men’s center work. Boys will need black tap shoes and clean tennis shoes or black jazz shoes. They will wear dark colored (navy or black) shorts or sweatpants and a white t-shirt. Just for boys will be instructed by James and Orcinneo. The 5-8 year old class for boys will run for 12 weeks and end December 12th.

COMBO (Ages 3-7) This is a wonderful introduction into dance. Children are offered the chance to explore Ballet and Tap in one 45 minute class. Students will learn basic ballet positions and movements. Loco-motor skills and coordination will be the main focus of the class. Students will wear a leotard and tights, pink ballet shoes and black tap shoes. Hair will be securely off the face and neck. NEW – We are adding basic tumbling to our Combo classes to build upper body strength.

PRE BALLET (Teacher Recommended) This 45 minute class is a graduation to a more formalized ballet class. The basics will be expanded upon with concentration on proper posture and more challenging combinations. Students will wear black leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes. Hair will be worn securely off the face and neck.

PRE TAP (Teacher Recommended) This 45 minute class will give older children the chance to expand upon the basic rhythms taught in the combo classes. They will explore more challenging combinations and begin to learn the origination of tap terminology. Students will wear any colored leotard, pink or tan tights and black tap shoes. Hair will be worn securely off the face and neck.

BALLET (8 years old and up) is a formalized style of movement that started in the courts of Europe. It has established terminology and sets of exercises that are incorporated into barre and then center work. Body placement, posture, balance, flexibility, and coordination are stressed. Training in Ballet is essential to the skilled development of all dance forms. Students will wear black leotard with pink tights and pink ballet shoes. All female students should have their hair in a bun.

JAZZ (8 Years old and up) borrows from Modern and Ballet technique and develops stylistically. Therefore, it is required to have at least one year of Ballet training to enroll in a Jazz class. Classes consist of a warm-up, floor stretch, center barre, progressions and center combinations. Students will wear solid colored leotard, tights, and black Jazz shoes. Jazz pants are permitted but they must fit tightly throughout the hip, thigh, and knee area. Hair for all students should be secured off the face and neck.

Lyrical, Jumps and Turns (Ballet Levels 3 & Up) Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz techniques. “It is a contemporary dancing which is a mix of ballet and modern but with a storyline.” Lyrical dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion. Lyrical dance is known by its connected and graceful movements of the body. This class will also incorporate specific work to improve technique for jumps and turns. Students will need any color of leotard and tights. You will need dance shoes such as paws.

TAP is rhythmic footwork done with special shoes designed for Tap. Its origins are in America, based on the Irish Jig and Clogging. The emphasis is placed on rhythm, style and clarity of sounds. Tap is an excellent way to develop a good sense of rhythm, timing and stage presence. Students will wear solid colored leotard and tights or jazz pants and tan tap shoes. Hair is secured off the face and neck.

MUSICAL THEATER (spelled “theatre” in England and “theater” in the USA) is a form of theater combining music, songs, dance, and spoken dialogue distinguished by the use of popular music. Typically “when the emotion becomes too strong for speech, you sing; when it becomes too strong for song, you dance.” Dance in the context of story-telling in theater will be explored with an emphasis on the performance persona. Students will wear leotard and tights. Bring Tap and Jazz shoes. Hair will be worn securely off the face and neck.

HIP HOP dances are often considered street dances that mix with more structured dance styles such as Jazz. Hip Hop dance encourages students to use many different stylistic techniques, is not structured and allows students to interpret the moves in varied ways. Hip Hop classes, although fast-paced and challenging, allow students to emphasize their creative rhythmic talents using age-appropriate music. Comfortable clothing and clean tennis shoes or jazz shoes.

Our class enrollment is limited to ensure
